10 Questions with Omar Elsayad

When did you join LFT?

I joined LFT almost a year ago.

How did you first learn about LFT?

One day a recruiter called me, and told me about a new start-up company, focused on LiDAR related applications. Which is not something you hear everyday! So, naturally I was curious, next thing I know, I am sitting across the table from our amazing team, signing a contract.

What do you do at LFT?

I am a perception algorithms engineer. I write methods and algorithms that try to make sense of the world as seen by the LiDAR sensor. I focus on object detection and classification, extraction of free drivable space ahead of the sensor, filtering out vegetation and other non-interesting objects.

What are you currently working on?

Currently I am working on the extraction of a safe, drivable, free space ahead of the vehicle. So, a future self-driving car could now exactly where to drive to, and how far.

What is your favorite thing about working at LFT?

What I really love about the company is the flexibility and openness we have. If I ever need anything I just ask, I could always run to my team-leader, or boss without any arrangement. This really helps me to learn quicker, and makes me grow as an engineer, professional, and as a person. Because of that, things get done much faster, and almost stress-free. This makes me really look forward to Mondays! Which is a phrase I thought I would never use.

What do you like most about your job?

I love the creativity I get to enjoy, when solving new problems, and the satisfaction I get when I finally do it. I also enjoy creating things, and seeing them in real-life applications on the road, gives me the feeling that I am changing the world, and adding something that wouldn’t otherwise exist.

What would you do (for a career) if you were not doing this?

I would be a primary school teacher! I always enjoy explaining things, and I really love this sparkle you see in someone’s eyes when they understand something for the first time. I like that children are curious and always want to learn new things. They never get tired of asking, and I never get tired of answering!

What do you like to do when you are not working?

I like to do physical activities that supplement my sedentary office job. I hit the gym 4-5 times a week, I swim, I cycle if the weather is fine. I also like dancing and working in the garden.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

I always wanted to pilot a small airplane, so I wish I could learn to fly.

What one food do you wish had zero calories?

I am an out-of-control snacker! So it is hard to pick just one, but if I have to choose, I would go with chocolate-chip cookies. Something about them just takes me to a happier place! I would love to do it guilt-free for once!
