Data protection regarding road trials for the development of secure algorithms for autonomous driving

The aim of our research is to make autonomous driving safer in future. In order to develop reliable algorithms (procedures), an LFT test vehicle makes regular journeys on German roads, recording 3D data using LiDAR and radar sensors as well as 2D camera data.


With regard to the protection of personal data, only the 2D camera data are relevant under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) due to the resolution of the images recorded and the wavelength ranges used. The camera has a limited field of view in the direction of travel. The legal basis for the collection of these data is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR legitimate interest (research & development). The camera data are anonymised after being recorded, so that details such as vehicle registration numbers and faces can no longer be identified. Data are only made available to the developers after anonymisation. The data are only used for the purpose of internal procedure development and are not published.
